Whatever Floats Your Chicken......

You know what blogging leads to? Blogging leads to other people's blogs and those blogs lead you to new products and new products lead you to addictions and new addictions lead you to fun and fun leads you to challenges and challenges lead you back to people's blogs and, well, you get the idea...
So I'd like to quickly blame Tammy for my latest addiction because now I'm in love with yet another  blog, From The Heart's Digital Stamp of the Month Challenge (July) and my always loved Mixed Media Monthly Challenge Blog.

I thought the progressive challenge of using this month's digital image, Inner Tube Birdbrain, with #14 Summer Days would be perfect together.
Here's how I made my faux wood mixed media Summer sign.

1.) Begin with a rectangle cut out piece of foam board from Walmart. Cut the edges real jagged and then cover it with a sheet of adhesive canvas.

2.)  Spread a light layer of Gesso for sealant and let dry. When dry, spread a light layer of crackle medium and let completely dry.
3.)  When crackle medium was dry, I took a ruler and drew two lines with a black pen and smudged with my finger to make lines for a faux wood sign appearance.
4.)  Pulled out the Distress paints and went to town coloring a beach scene.
5.) Colored up the challenge image with Copics and attached it to the sign. Added a layer of frantage with gold specks for a sandy beach, cut out sunglasses and flip flops on my cutting machine, painted them up and then adhered and lastly, added a jute twine for hanging.
6.) I aged up the edges with Antique Photo DI and then sat back, took a deep breath and wished I was there!
I loved being inspired by Summer Days Challenge with the pink flamingo. Figured this bird would be a more than adequate replacement and I loved the bejeweled glasses, so I had to add them too. The beach sign just made me think I had to create this bird's very own retreat.  Hope you like it!
Thank you SO much for your visit. I appreciate YOU more than you know.
Hugs and happy crafting,
Lisa x

Lisa, what a great technique of creating "wood" background! Great project my dear! Now to answer your question about white strawberry. It happened to be in the same box where I had those fluffy flowers so I just added it, and the sentiment was already printed and cut out so I went ahead and used it...pretty much a compilation of leftovers...
Have a great day my dear!!!

Thanks for showing us how this project came to life step by step. I didn't think it was this easy to make a faux wooden piece. Maybe it's not that easy, but you sure made it look so. Brilliant!

Where do you come up with these ideas!?! Foam core board to wooden plaque---too stinkin' clever. I'm in awe of how that black line looks so real. I agree with you about the FTH Birdbrains. I keep saying I'm going to get some of them. The glasses make this birdie extra stylin. Awesome, AWESOME project Twang!

Lisa, this is super COOL and interesting how different materials come together. "Floating Birdbrain" fits perfectly on your Little work of Art. What i really LOVE is that you add a glass on Birdbrain´s nose. That looks so stylish !!!

Ahhh - I love this. Brings back memories of floating down the Brazos river with our family years ago.... and it was soooo fun. It was definitely "floating to our happy place". LOVE your chicken Lisa - he looks quite happy!!! What a GREAT sign - just love it - SMILING big. j.

Are you kidding me? This isn't real wood? Why am I so jealous? Why do I think if I made this it would resemble nothing close to wood? No fair! I would have never guessed. Thanks for the how to. I might just try this and then show you what it actually does look like when I'm done.

Ok, I have to admit, while I totally love the floating chicken and it's fabulous spectacles, I am completely freaking out over the beachy sign you made!! What a brilliant idea and a fantastic background for your slightly baked chicken!
