Pumpkin Toffee Rum Spiced Coffee, Supernatural on Netflix and fingers covered in paint and glue... it's the simple things that make life great and that is why I love this challenge so much. I can just sit and create a little Christmas heirloom while I sip coffee, watch hunky men battle demons and ghosts, and just have a blast!

So here is my 4th offering for the challenge 12 Tags of Christmas, hosted by Linda at The Funkie Junkie.   Above you will notice the 4th tag of Linda's and next to it I've highlighted of few of things that she inspired me with.  I love, love, lurve the red and vintage evergreen of this tag. Completely retro feeling so I tried to capture that in my colors too. The deer are obviously wonderful as well as the berries and the Christmas tree. I decided to keep my tree traditional green and add green Stickles in various places. The wave of the ribbon and the triangle border led me to make the chevron background in this lid.

Again, a cheapy plastic snowflake covered in a light layer of Gesso and then colored with Distress Paint and heated for shrinkage and wear.

You ever slam your head accidentally into the corner of a cabinet or step on an unsuspecting tack nail in the carpet and really just lose your wits? Well, why then does it seem okay to get 3rd degree burns from your hot glue gun and somehow maintain your sanity? It must be the love of creating and making art. 

Bright side, I can now pursue a career in larceny as I no longer have fingerprints.

 So, that's something...

Let's just say I really got my hands into this project!

Here is Linda's stunning tag for challenge 5 and the canning lid base.

 

Isn't that tag just striking?!  What is not inspiring on this...absolutely everything is scrumptious.  Linda says that she used Weather Wood Distress Paint on her tag so that is what I painted on the lid base, after first applying crackle paste.

The great thing about plastic ornaments...you can simply heat them up a little bit and then apply your own desired coverage on them. I used embossing powder here to maintain the silver theme.

What really caught my eye on Linda's tag beyond the fact that it so incredibly different from the 'traditional' colors of Christmas is that gentleman carrying a wreath. I decided that my lid would represent his wreath and have it be silvery metal in appearance.

I scavenged for random bits of pleasing pieces and then began the gluing..

Since there is the word 'family' on the wreath I thought it would be fun to use the cut file of

Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

Hello, hello, hello and welcome back again. I've been plugging away at my favorite holiday challenge, The 12 Tags of Christmas, hosted by Linda at The Funkie Junkie.

This is my very clean and simple rendition of Linda's 3rd tag (below).  

 

The inspiration that was offered up on her tag was the immense snowflake, the mixture of greens and blues and the metal embellishments.  I even love how she edged the tag with embossing powder so I too added a little Frantage to the edges of my mason jar lid.

There's still PLENTY of time to join in the fun and I know Linda would love to have you play along and it's all done at your own pace, so hop on over and join in the festivities.

Hello and welcome back!

It's my second entry for the 12 Tags of Christmas Challenge.  This entire challenge I'll be submitting mason jar lid ornaments. I hope you enjoy them and they inspire you to play along in the fun at 

The Funkie Junkie.

As with all my entries each year, I like to pick a common theme and then embellish it based on what inspires me from Linda's challenge tags.  This year you will see that I have chosen to convert Mason Jar Lids and plastic snowflakes (melted below with heat tool) as the common elements.

 

This is Linda's inspiration tag #2.  What truly knocked my socks off at first glance were the red  bows and that fabulous background.  I've included a picture to detail what I used to make a similar background for my ornament.  The following details that peaked my interest  was the paper star and the clear snowflake.  I chose to duplicate like things on my ornament as well.

I'm getting so excited to see what these will look like on the Christmas tree!

12 Tags of Christmas Finish Line...

A giant burden has been lifted...I finally made it to the end of the 12 Tags of Christmas challenge!  

Please excuse me for a moment while I toot this little horn and throw a handful of confetti  .................

Okie dokie, I'm back now.

Here's Linda's gorgeously embossed tag 12

I had this on the monitor for several hours and while walking back and forth to the laundry room, I'd glance over and look at this tag, just waiting for the muse to make itself known.  For the record, I completed 4 loads of laundry, mopped the kitchen floor, dusted and vacuumed the downstairs, cleaned one bathroom, took out recyclables, and still, nothing.

My son walks through the door after school, takes one look at it and says, "The small tag on top reminds me of one of those vintage fancy dressed up gingerbread cookies." BAM! 

Whoop, there it is...

The base of Linda's tag is rich vibrant red, which is one inspiration. I've preserved the edge of the original Altoids tin which is already red. 

 The texture of the small tag did remind me of the vests seen on older gingerbread's that are very ornate looking.  Using 3 layers of tissue paper, I've applied DI to a holly embossing folder with Vintage Photo and using gesso, applied it to the lid. A layer of UTEE was then applied and heat dried and the texture of the  tissue paper, gesso and UTEE raised the background up like a baking cookie in the oven. VERY COOL!    The small red bow is another bit of "got to use that" and the white of the ornament and green of the holly are represented in my tin with the fence, snow and trees.

The gingerbread set is actually a pre-colored decoupage set I found at Wal-mart and worked perfectly for this little scene. Additional snow and stickles and a cotton ball of smoke coming out of the fireplace were added to finish it off.

It's been such a fantastic run with this challenge and I sincerely thank Linda for such a wonderful opportunity to make little treasures for my kids to hang on the Christmas tree. I have really loved making ALL of these ornaments.  Thank you also to The Funkie Junkie Boutique for sponsoring this challenge and supporting my crafting addiction with many elements purchased there that were used on these tins.

12 Tags Of Christmas #10

Is it just me or does anyone else hear Pink Floyd playing in their head?

I know this tin is for the Christmas tree and as many times as I tried to force a classic Bing Crosby or Elvis holiday tune into my thoughts, all that kept coming out was "All in all it was just a brick in the...All in all it was all just bricks in the wall."  Anywho...

The last tag for Linda's 12 Tags of Christmas is coming to an end. She has posted up her final inspiration tag and so I'm feeling the pressure to finish them up by the 17th of December. I'll be like the little train that could, "I think I can, I think I can, I can ...I can."

 

Here is Linda's gorgeous Tag 10

I just about flipped. Doesn't this look exactly like a chimney? A glorious conglomeration of goodies to choose from and be inspired by.  Without a doubt, the brick, droopy woopy bits of snow, the vintage ornament and the holly drew me in. 

So here again is a look at how I interpreted her tag on my Altoids can.

The brick base was created by painting a generous layering of gesso and while still damp, I pressed the brick embossing folder down into the gesso leaving the imprint.  Using Distress Ink markers (Thank you SO much Shelby...I love them!) I've colored in the bricks.  The snow is packed around the edges of the lid and droopy wooped as well with this magical stuff called Snow-Tex.

A vintage ornament with holly leaves, bakers twine, wooden button and faux berries tops off the brick wall.   A little festive gel sticker M for our monogram.

Altered Altoids Tin Ornaments



Alrighty then, let's all grab some Red Bull and start this post! :)

Lots of pictures in this one as I'm just getting caught up to six challenges all in the same place.  You may know of Linda Coughlin over at The Funkie Junkie, if you don't, you're about to get a preview of her very cool challenge called 12 Tags Of Christmas. Her wonderful boutique, The Funkie Junkie Boutique is also hosting the prizes for these challenges! She did this last year and I'm soooo excited she's running it again for 2012.

 

Tag One

Looks nothing like a tag, but that's okay, it doesn't have to!  It only needs to draw from Linda's tag, the inspiration you derive and place it on whatever item you desire.  I desired Altoids cans!

Linda's tags are oozing with inspiration and gushing with glorious textures.  So, rather than reinvent the wheel, I decided to pull almost all of the elements from tag 1 and incorporate that onto my tin.  By the way, the tins will be used for the 12 days before Christmas as they hang on the tree. Each night the kiddos will open one and retrieve one little gift from Mom and Dad...awwww, isn't that sweet??

Tag Two

Looky who's coming to town...it's Steampunk Santa! 



 
Here you will notice Linda's inspirational tag two with Jolly and cogs and metal galore. It's fairly apparent the inspiration I drew from it as you'll see the base of my Altoids can has been (best I could) duplicated to look like riveted metal.  Simply done with double layers of white cardstock cut into various shapes and foil tape applied over that and then tons of inking and globbing and whatnot.

Here's the sculpy again...

Steampunk Santa complete with a black metal screw for one eye and clock parts for a makeshift monocle on the other. OH, figured he needed more metal so I added a little link from a chain and gave him a nose ring..hee hee...how hip is he now?

Tag Three

Taking inspiration from every bit of Linda's tag three, I duplicated my version of the snowman, blue background, snowflakes, mesh and white bow.  Following Linda's lead really makes it easy for creativity to come out and play.  Here's my little Frosty all made up with Gesso, twine arms, black hat and frosted glittery snow.  You'll also find glitter on my chair, floor, outfit, carpet, face, car, blankets...but man o' man, do I love that shimmery stuff!

 

Tag Four

This is the daughter's favorite so far.  I think I'm pretty fond of it too; especially the coffee part!

Each time I made one of these, the entire can was smothered with Gesso inside and out.  This particular can I decided to make a gingham base pattern.  By cutting strips of tape and layering them in a gingham pattern, I then inked the base and pulled the tape off.  If you look at the very outer edges you'll see the pattern.

    



 

 Linda's tag four of inspiration on the left has just about every scrumptious country-ish detail.  Looking at her tag made me think of a front door.  I drew inspiration from the gingham, rich embossed red wording, the greenery, post card lettering and the vintage advertisement. Now if you were to come to my house (note the little green monopoly house in the greenery arrangement?) you'd be served up a nice cup of hot coffee or tea.

 

Tag Five





Another Altoids tin that is encased in sheet music.  Like the title? Reminded me of being at home with family on a cold winter's night.  Chipboard powder embossed lettering, a few gadgets from my stash, and a black and silver shimmery rosette complete this tin..well, almost...

Linda's tag five on the left has the most wonderful vintage appeal. All the rustic and antiqued hues with tiny snow flurries.  Absolutely love the script on Noel.  Figured why not use the inside to capture more of the elements I loved on Linda's tag.  Emboss resisted snowflakes atop the musical folder embossed paper.

 Tag Six

Do you love that clock? It was a POC (piece of crap) that I found at the thrift store for a few pennies and threw it in the "I'll use this for something later" drawer. Today was that later...YEAH!  Notice the "Naughty, bad, nice, perfect" lettering?  Those were rub on letters I added to the center of the clock piece and then aged it up a bit.  Ok, moving on...

Here is the latest tag challenge STILL happening over at the Funkie Junkie and would you look at Linda's beautiful tag on the left?  I took from it the vibrant reds, the clock piece, the tree (greenery) and bows and the brownish background and the additional tag.   Above you'll notice the incredible awful picture of the before clock picture.

And just because I thought you'd like to see them all together as one happy family.  Had to stack them on my cabinet because it's still waaaaaay to early to get that ol' Christmas tree out yet.

As you can see by this project, I've been up to my elbows the past 2 days in Gesso getting all these done, but I'll be making my rounds tomorrow to stalk you all!
